May 21, 2024: Slow Food KNOW FISH® Dinner
Slow Food East Bay is committing a large part of its attention to guiding our community toward resources to help alleviate the confusion around what seafood is "safe" to eat. From understanding trawling and mercury levels to comparing Alaskan and California salmon, we’re exploring the complexities of sourcing and cooking fish through gatherings both large and small.
We kicked off this year-plus of exploration on Tuesday May 21st, gathering in community for a KNOW FISH dinner® at 25 Lusk in San Francisco. Chef Matthew Dolan and his team cooked an incredible meal of four courses of locally sourced, seasonal and sustainable fish paired with locally sourced and sustainable wines.
During the dinner, guests had the unique opportunity to hear the story of the seafood they were eating directly from the harvester or fishmonger who sourced it. Sea Forager Kirk Lombard, Kenny Belov of TwoxSea, and Gary Fleener of Hog Island Oysters shared insights into local fisheries and ocean systems, discussing climate change, problematic policies, and the impact of cheap imports. They also explained why it’s so important to pay more attention to our ocean systems and ask pointed questions of fishmongers and food purveyors.
Slow Fish North America Oversight Team members Kelly Collins-Geiser and Jacquelyn Ross hosted the evening, sharing the mission and values of Slow Fish.
We also raised awareness by donating 6% of the event ticket price to Slow Fish North America to support their continued advocacy for local fish ecosystems that are Good, Clean, and Fair.
It was a memorable evening with valuable insights and delicious food! We can’t wait to continue the conversation in future gatherings.
