November 10th, 2024: Grains Festival!

Slow Food East Bay hosted an afternoon of delicious eats and great fun, diving deep into the wide-ranging and diverse world of grains in our food system!

We gathered at St. George Spirits in Alameda on Sunday, November 10th, to explore heritage grains through the cultural and place-based food lens of seven East Bay chefs: Nafy Flatley of Teranga Foods, Rahul Hari, Manny of Bolita Masa, Cafe Colucci, Loren of Basecamp Bakery, Marlene of Tsiri, and a team hailing from rice culture. The event showcased an exciting array of grains including millet, teff, fonio, wheat, rice, corn, and amaranth – oh my!

Guests also had the opportunity to learn from and buy products from grain growers, millers, and advocacy groups like Farmer Mai Nguyen, Bob Klein from Community Grains, David from Capay Mills, Wendy from Luna Koshihikari Rice, and Tim from Admiral Maltings. Honore Mills offered special breads and pastries for sale.

In addition, attendees could take tours of the St. George manufactory and Admiral Maltings, all while sipping on delicious beers and whiskey made from grains, courtesy of St George SpiritsAlmanac Beer Co, and Faction Brewing.

Ticket prices included tasting dishes from seven chefs, educational panels, and Admiral Malting tours, with drinks available for purchase separately from our vendors. Children under 8 were welcome to attend for free.
